SEAMAP Real-time Plots for the year 2001
Week 2
This is the second preliminary data summary for the 2001 SEAMAP Summer Shrimp/Groundfish Survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This week's summary includes sampling on June 13 by the NOAA Ship OREGON II east of the Mississippi River, sampling on June 18 from Alabama's A.E. VERRILL, and sampling from Texas vessels from June 11 through June 18. Catch data from the OREGON II and A.E. VERRILL were taken with a 40-ft trawl. Catch data from the Texas vessels were taken with 20-ft trawls.
Catch rates have been converted to pounds per hour for a 40-ft trawl. Shrimp counts are heads-off. Catch rates for finfish are given in the charts divided by 10; e.g., a charted catch rate of 19 means 190 lb/hr. The squares on the charts are 10-minute grids and contain an average catch or count from one or more sampling stations within a particular grid. The sampling stations were located randomly by depth zone.
The catch data east of the River indicated that the highest brown shrimp catch rate was 2.3 lb/hr of 35-count shrimp at 29°59.4' N. lat. and 88°12.3' W. long., in 15 fm. No white shrimp were caught east of the River during this sampling period. The catch data east of the River indicated that the highest pink shrimp catch rate was 9.2 lb/hr of 26-count shrimp at 29°59.4' N. lat. and 88°12.3' W. long., in 15 fm.
The highest finfish catch rate east of the River was 657 lb/hr reported in 40 fm at 29°22.2' W. lat. and 88°09.0' W. long., with Atlantic croaker being the predominant finfish species.
The catch data west of the River indicated that the highest brown shrimp catch rate was 10.9 lb/hr of 82-count shrimp at 29°36.3' N. lat. and 93°50.4' W. long., in 4 fm. White shrimp catch rates west of the River were very low (< .8 lb/hr), and no pink shrimp were caught west of the River.
The highest finfish catch rate west of the River was 708 lb/hr reported in 5 fm at 29°34.5' W. lat. and 93°53.2' W. long., with Atlantic croaker being the predominant finfish species.
The catch data for Texas indicated that the highest brown shrimp catch rate was 11.2 lb/hr of 57-count shrimp at 27°47.2' N. lat. and 96°56.8' W. long., in 10 fm. The highest catch rate of white shrimp in Texas was 4.0 lb/hr of 14-count shrimp at 27°44.8' N. lat. and 97°00.8' W. long., in 9 fm. No pink shrimp were caught off Texas during this sampling period.
The highest finfish catch rate off Texas was 422 lb/hr reported in 5 fm at 29°25.8' W. lat. and 94°32.2' W. long., with Atlantic croaker being the predominant finfish species.
We anticipate mailing updated data from the SEAMAP survey every Wednesday. Sampling coverage for the next weekly period will be in Texas offshore waters by Texas' vessels and waters off Mississippi by the TOMMY MUNRO. The OREGON II broke down during sampling and will not be available for sampling next week off the Texas coast.
