SEAMAP Real-time Plots for the year 2000
Week 3
This is the third preliminary data summary for the 2000 SEAMAP Summer Shrimp/Groundfish Survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This week's summary includes sampling from June 20 through June 27 by the NOAA Ship OREGON II off the Texas coast, sampling from Texas vessels from June 19 through June 23, and sampling from June 24 through June 26 by the TOMMY MUNRO. Catch data from the OREGON II and TOMMY MUNRO were taken with a 40-ft trawl. Catch data from the Texas vessels were taken with 20-ft trawls.
Catch rates have been converted to pounds per hour for a 40-ft trawl. Shrimp counts are heads-off. Catch rates for finfish are given in the charts divided by 10; e.g., a charted catch rate of 19 means 190 lb/hr. The squares on the charts are 10-minute grids and contain an average catch or count from one or more sampling stations within a particular grid. The sampling stations were located randomly by depth zone.
The catch data east of the River indicated that the highest brown shrimp catch rate was 37.1 lb/hr of 45-count shrimp at 29°41.9' N. lat. and 88°45.4' W. long., in 7 fm. The catch data east of the River indicated that the highest pink shrimp catch rate was 15.1 lb/hr of 38-count shrimp at 30°05.3' N. lat. and 88°27.8' W. long., in 9 fm.
The highest finfish catch rate east of the River was 330 lb/hr reported in 19 fm at 29°32.2' W. lat. and 88°35.5' W. long., with no predominant finfish species.
The catch data west of the River indicated that the highest brown shrimp catch rate was 9.9 lb/hr of 80-count shrimp at 29°38.5' N. lat. and 93°45.1' W. long., in 5 fm. The catch data west of the River indicated that the highest white shrimp catch rate was 11.6 lb/hr of 18-count shrimp at 29°31.6' N. lat. and 93°49.8' W. long., in 7 fm. No pink shrimp were caught west of the River.
The highest finfish catch rate west of the River was 174 lb/hr reported in 7 fm at 29°31.6' N. lat. and 93°49.8' W. long., with no predominant finfish species.
The catch data for Texas indicated that the highest brown shrimp catch rate was 139.3 lb/hr of 51-count shrimp at 26°33.2' N. lat. and 97°04.6' W. long., in 15 fm. Catches of white shrimp were very low ( < 1 lb/hr) off Texas this week. The highest pink shrimp catch rate was 30.4 lb/hr of 49-count shrimp at 26°04.1' N. lat. and 97°06.5' W. long., in 9 fm.
The highest finfish catch rate for Texas was 318 lb/hr reported in 7 fm at 26°35.1' W. lat. and 97°15.1' W. long., with no predominant finfish species.
We anticipate mailing updated data from the SEAMAP survey every Wednesday. Sampling coverage for the next weekly period will be in Texas offshore waters by the OREGON II and Texas' vessels.
