SEAMAP Real-time Plots for the year 2000

Week 4

This is the fourth preliminary data summary for the 2000 SEAMAP Summer Shrimp/Groundfish Survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This week's summary includes sampling from June 27 through July 3 by the NOAA Ship OREGON II off the Texas coast, sampling from Texas vessels from June 26 through June 27, and sampling from July 1 through July 3 by the TOMMY MUNRO. Catch data from the OREGON II and TOMMY MUNRO were taken with a 40-ft trawl. Catch data from the Texas vessels were taken with 20-ft trawls.

Catch rates have been converted to pounds per hour for a 40-ft trawl. Shrimp counts are heads-off. Catch rates for finfish are given in the charts divided by 10; e.g., a charted catch rate of 19 means 190 lb/hr. The squares on the charts are 10-minute grids and contain an average catch or count from one or more sampling stations within a particular grid. The sampling stations were located randomly by depth zone.

No samples were taken east of the Mississippi River during this sampling period. The catch data west of the River indicated that the highest brown shrimp catch rate was 5.2 lb/hr of 90-count shrimp at 29°43.0' N. lat. and 93°31.9' W. long., in 4 fm. The catch data west of the River indicated that the highest white shrimp catch rate was 13.0 lb/hr of 18-count shrimp at 28°58.4' N. lat. and 91°11.8' W. long., in 3 fm. Only 1 pink shrimp was caught west of the River.

The highest finfish catch rate west of the River was 385 lb/hr reported in 3 fm at 28°58.4' N. lat. and 91°11.8' W. long., with no predominant finfish species.

The catch data for Texas indicated that the highest brown shrimp catch rate was 74.8 lb/hr of 39-count shrimp at 28°32.1' N. lat. and 95°20.7' W. long., in 14 fm. The highest white shrimp catch rate was 64.7 lb/hr of 14-count shrimp at 28°04.5' N. lat. and 95°04.9' W. long., in 5 fm. The highest pink shrimp catch rate was 14.3 lb/hr of 34-count shrimp at 28°54.9' N. lat. and 94°41.3' W. long., in 10 fm.

The highest finfish catch rate for Texas was 901 lb/hr reported in 5 fm at 28°04.5' N. lat. and 95°04.9' W. long., with no predominant finfish species.

Sampling coverage for the next weekly period will be in Texas offshore waters by the OREGON II.
