SEAMAP Real-time Plots for the year 2007

Week 4

Below is the fourth preliminary data summary for the 2007 SEAMAP Summer Shrimp/Groundfish Survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This week's summary includes sampling June 25 through July 2 by the NMFS vessel Oregon II, the Mississippi vessel Tommy Munro, the Louisiana vessel Pelican, and the Alabama vessel A.E. Verrill. Catch data from the vessels were taken with a 40-ft trawl.

Plotted catch rates have been converted to pounds per hour for a 40-ft trawl (20-ft trawl x 2). Shrimp counts are heads-on. The squares on the charts are 10-minute grids. The number in each grid square is the average catch or count from all stations (may be one or more stations) that were sampled within a particular grid. The sampling stations were located randomly by depth zone.

The catch data from east of the Mississippi River indicated that the highest catch rate of brown shrimp was 14.1 lb/hr in 7 fm at 30° 12' N. lat. and 88° 15' W. long. The highest catch rate for white shrimp was 9.7 lb/hr at the same station. The highest catch rate of pink shrimp was 16.6 lb/hr in 8 fm at 30° 07' N. lat. and 88° 23' W. long. The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 81.8 lb/hr at the same station.

The catch data from west of the Mississippi River indicated that the highest catch rate of brown shrimp was 43.9 lb/hr in 14 fm at 28° 41' N. lat. and 91° 26' W. long. The highest catch rate for white shrimp was 24.7 lb/hr in 7 fm at 28° 46' N. lat. and 91° 15' W. long. No pink shrimp were caught west of the Mississippi River during this sampling period. The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 387.2 lb/hr in 12 fm at 28° 45' N. lat. and 91° 29' W. long.

The catch data from Texas indicated that the highest catch rate of brown shrimp was 103.4 lb/hr in 18 fm at 28° 13' N. lat. and 95° 48' W. long. The highest catch rate for white shrimp was 24.4 lb/hr in 6 fm at 29° 12' N. lat. and 94° 52' W. long. The highest catch rate of pink shrimp was 5.4 lb/hr in 20 fm at 28° 21' N. lat. and 95° 03' W. long. The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 873.2 lb/hr in 6 fm at 29° 12' N. lat. and 94° 52' W. long.

Sampling coverage for the next weekly report will be by the NMFS vessel Oregon II.
