SEAMAP Real-time Plots for the year 2005

Week 5

Below is the fifth preliminary data summary for the 2005 SEAMAP Summer Shrimp/Groundfish Survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico . This week's summary includes sampling July 2 - July 4 by the R/V Tommy Munro and sampling July 4 - July 5 by the NMFS vessel Oregon II. Catch data from the R/V Tommy Munro and Oregon II were taken with a 40-ft trawl.

Plotted catch rates have been converted to pounds per hour for a 40-ft trawl (20-ft trawl x 2). Shrimp counts are heads-on. The squares on the charts are 10-minute grids. The number in each grid square is the average catch or count from all stations (may be one or more stations) that were sampled within a particular grid. The sampling stations were located randomly by depth zone.

The catch data from west of the Mississippi River indicated that the highest catch rate for brown shrimp was 10.9 lb/hr in 2 fm at 29° 21' N. lat. and 91° 53' W. long. The highest catch rate of white shrimp was 6.6 lb/hr in 3 fm at 29° 05' N. lat. and 90° 13' W. long. No pink shrimp were caught during this sampling period west of the Mississippi River . The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 608 lb/hr in 4 fm at 29° 09' N. lat. and 91° 55' W. long.

The catch data from Texas indicated that the highest catch rate of brown shrimp was 48.3 lb/hr in 15 fm at 28° 41' N. lat. and 94° 55' W. long. The highest catch rate for white shrimp was 0.6 lb/hr in 6 fm at 29° 21' N. lat. and 94° 34' W. long. The highest catch rate for pink shrimp was 15.0 lb/hr in 10 fm at 28° 50' N. lat. and 94° 55' W. long. The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 381.6 lb/hr in 6 fm at 29° 21' N. lat. and 94° 34' W. long.

Sampling coverage for the next weekly report will be by the NMFS vessel Oregon II.
