SEAMAP Real-time Plots for the year 2001

Week 6

This is the sixth preliminary data summary for the 2001 SEAMAP Summer Shrimp/Groundfish Survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This week's summary includes sampling from July 15 through July 22 by the NOAA Ship OREGON II off the Texas and Louisiana coasts as well as sampling July 16 through July 19 by the R/V PELICAN off the Louisiana coast. Catch data from the OREGON II and R/V PELICAN were taken with a 40-ft trawl.

Catch rates have been converted to pounds per hour for a 40-ft trawl. Shrimp counts are heads-off. Catch rates for finfish are given in the charts divided by 10; e.g., a charted catch rate of 19 means 190 lb/hr. The squares on the charts are 10-minute grids and contain an average catch or count from one or more sampling stations within a particular grid. The sampling stations were located randomly by depth zone.

The catch data west of the River indicated that the highest brown shrimp catch rate was 4.1 lb/hr of 54-count shrimp at 29°01.1' N. lat. and 89°38.2' W. long., in 19 fm. The catch data west of the River indicated that the highest white shrimp catch rate was 3.7 lb/hr of 13-count shrimp at 28°32.7' N. lat. and 90°48.6' W. long., in 14 fm. The catch data west of the River indicated that the highest pink shrimp catch rate was 5.5 lb/hr of 28-count shrimp at 28°42.4' N. lat. and 90°15.0' W. long., in 16 fm.

The highest finfish catch rate west of the River was 126 lb/hr reported in 10 fm at 28°40.2' N. lat. and 90°31.8' W. long., with Atlantic croaker being the predominant finfish species.

The catch data for Texas indicated that the highest brown shrimp catch rate was 81.6 lb/hr of 69-count shrimp at 28°21.2' N. lat. and 96°19.4' W. long., in 7 fm. White shrimp catch rates were low off Texas this week. The highest pink shrimp catch rate was 15.4 lb/hr of 35-count shrimp at 28°52.1' N. lat. and 94°26.9' W. long., in 11 fm.

The highest finfish catch rate for Texas was 522 lb/hr reported in 5 fm at 28°46.0' N. lat. and 95°31.9' W. long., with Atlantic cutlassfish being the predominant finfish species.

The main trawl winch on the OREGON II broke this past week, so this will be the last mailing for the 2001 Survey.
