SEAMAP Real-time Plots for the year 2002
Week 6
This is the sixth preliminary data summary for the 2002 SEAMAP Summer Shrimp/Groundfish Survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This week's summary includes sampling from July 8 through July 15 by the NOAA Ship OREGON II off the Louisiana coast. Catch data from the OREGON II were taken with a 40-ft trawl.
Catch rates have been converted to pounds per hour for a 40-ft trawl. Shrimp counts are heads-off. Catch rates for finfish are given in the charts divided by 10; e.g., a charted catch rate of 19 means 190 lb/hr. The squares on the charts are 10-minute grids and contain an average catch or count from one or more sampling stations within a particular grid. The sampling stations were located randomly by depth zone.
The catch data west of the River indicated that the highest brown shrimp catch rate was 11.5 lb/hr of 36-count shrimp at 28º31.1' N. lat. and 91º00.7' W. long., in 17 fm. White shrimp were only caught at five stations, and all catches were less than one pound per hour. The catch data west of the River indicated that the highest pink shrimp catch rate was 1.3 lb/hr of 10-count shrimp at 28º45.6' N. lat. and 90º19.8' W. long., in 12 fm. The highest finfish catch rate west of the River was 725 lb/hr reported at 28º40.4' N. lat. and 89º55.7' W. long., in 50 fm, with Atlantic croaker being the predominant finfish species.
Sampling coverage for the next weekly period will be in Louisiana and Mississippi offshore waters.
